Humans have always sought to protect their valuables. This process has involved many elaborate and sometimes ineffective methods which have been refined over the last forty centuries. With the rise of ever larger communities in which it was impossible to know every member of society, this security became ever more important. There are two main demons which prevent safe-keeping valuables, theft and fire. Much of our earliest history was lost to fire or other elements. Important documentation and valuables have also been lost to theft and espionage over the centuries.
For this reason, fire safes and burglary safes have become some of the most important innovations in the history of security. Some of the first truly effective safes were of the stereotypical ‘pirate chest variety.’ These strong oak boxes were banded with iron to help ensure that an intruder could not easily access them. Initially, these boxes offered little in the way of fire protection but this was about to change. Ingredients like concrete insulation or other combinations of lye and other chemicals offered rudimentary fire protection. The concrete would withstand some amount of fire but as the water ultimately evaporated out of the concrete the box lost its ability to protect from fire.
Security safes were later improved by casting the whole safe out of metal alloys and using ever more advanced insulation materials that were still closely related to common concrete. These improvements were marked, but still not truly reliable. In fact, it was not until 1917 that any mandated codification was instituted for safes in the USA. Preliminary exploration of safes then on the market revealed that in either category, fire or theft, most safes then on the market had little efficacy. The Underwriter’s Laboratory is the institution in the US which still oversees these qualifications today and is known for being one of the most rigorous in the world for testing fire safes and security safes.
In recent days gun safes have become, necessarily, ever more popular. While there has always been a need to protect weapons from theft or misuse, modern times require even more vigilance than was necessary in the past. If a person’s gun is stolen they may even be liable for crimes later committed with it. Also, children have a strong capacity to hurt themselves or others with a gun if given half a chance. Gun safes alleviate these concerns by securely locking dangerous weapons out of reach of children and criminals. They too, are an integral part of home security.
We sure hope you have enjoyed this brief introduction to safes and security. Whether you seek to protect documents, valuables, or weapons a safe is a must have item. The rest of this site will deal with specific types of safes available on the market, their relative uses and disadvantages and hopefully we will be able to help you select the right safe for you.
