Fire Safe

Fire safes are safes designed to withstand the rigors of extreme heat. Most fire safes have rudimentary security features to prevent burglary but are not meant to withstand the tactics employed by an experienced safecracker or thief. Some safes are designed to prevent both fire and burglary but are much more expensive.

A floor safe encased in concrete is a very effective fire safe even if it was not designed to protect against fire. But should a fire happen, they are not water tight and water damage from fire hoses often occurs. To counteract this, encase your valuables in dry-bags or double-bagged zip-lock freezer bags.

Most fire safes are only designed to withstand extreme heats for either half-hour or four-hour durations. The typical maximum temperature fire safes are designed to withstand is 350 degrees Fahrenheit or 177 degrees Celsius. In the USA, Underwriters Laboratories oversees and monitors that all fire safes meet the guidelines and expectations they set forth.
